If you’re planning a trip to the island of Gran Canaria, here are my tips on hotels for different interests and budgets based on our recent holiday there.
The 5 star Lopesan Baobab Resort in Playa de los Meloneras is a great choice for family fun. Kids will love exploring the grounds as there are full size replicas of giraffes, rhinos, elephants, rhinos, zebras and flamingoes dotted around the hotel gardens.
There are two kids pools with all sorts of additions such as a chute where you land in the pool, a see-saw in one of the pools and a monkey fountain. There’s also the Panchi World kids club. A couple of the larger pools have “beaches” and I saw some kids playing with buckets and spades there.
The 3 star IFA Beach Hotel in San Agustin, is a good choice for value for money. The rooms are a little dated but the pool area is lovely and the buffet meals are very good. Most of the rooms have sea views from their balconies.
San Agustin beach is just outside the cafe in the pool area. There’s a pleasant walk along the promenade towards Playa del Ingles. There are a few cafes and restaurants on the prom in San Agustin but the cheapest lunch I spotted was at the pool cafe.
The 4 star IFA Dunamar is close to many bars, cafes and restaurants on the beach front. As soon as you leave the hotel grounds from the beach gate you’ve got lots of entertainment from which to choose. The beach here is large and you can walk to the Maspalomas Dunes.
If you come out of the hotel’s main entrance there’s a path to the elevated prom and if you walk along here you’ll come to another collection of restaurants and bars.
