The following holiday destinations combine ancient history with a modern tourist resort, well worth knowing when one of you is an intrepid explorer at heart while the other follows the ancient rituals of sun-worshipping.
- Paphos, Cyprus: Tombs of Kings to St Paul’s Pillar, the Byzantine castle, the Temple of Aphrodite and the mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion.
- Valletta, Malta: Grand Harbour, the Grand Master’s Palace, St John’s Cathedral and Fort St Elmo.
- Marrakech, Morocco: Koutoubia Mosque (built in 1162 and is the largest building in the city), Saadian Tombs (which dates from 1557) or visit the Mellah, once the largest Jewish quarter in Morocco.
- Chania, Crete, Greece: The old town has so much to discover; with ruins from the Minoan era, medieval fortifications and a 15th century lighthouse.
- Tarragona, Costa Dorada, Spain: Considered the most important Roman town in Spain which is dotted with Roman ruins including a Roman Amphitheatre.
